Arizona Two Spirit Powwow Celebrates Inclusivity, Tribal Culture

PHOENIX, AZ — The second annual Arizona Two Spirit Powwow this weekend will feature competition dancing in categories for toddlers to adults. The Saturday event at South Mountain Community College’s Performing Arts Center Amphitheater opens with a grand entry at 12:30 p.m.
Competition dancing will be held in four age divisions: toddlers, juniors, teens and adults, as well as one across all age groups called “Two Spirit Special.”
The event promoting inclusiveness is sponsored by the PFLAG Phoenix Native American Chapter, known as Native PFLAG. Formerly known as Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, PFLAG is a large national advocacy group that unites the families and friends of LGBTQ people.
Inter-tribal and social dances give those attending an opportunity to learn about Native American culture.
Head dancers include Sky Duncan, Maurisa TwoTwo, and Dwayne Pierce with Ryan Rumley serving as emcee and host drum by Maswade. PFLAG National Executive Director Brian Bond will also be present, along with Native PFLAG leadership, including Native PFLAG Founder and President Sheila Lopez, Mr. Southwest Two Spirit Iann Austin, and Miss Apache Diva and Miss Supreme Pride Té Titla.
Dancing and singing aren’t only highlights of the Powwow.
South Mountain Community College Native American Student Club will be selling Indian frybread. There also will be several Native American art and craft booths and resource tables by local Native American non-profit organizations.
Admission is free. Alcohol is prohibited.
